ANZSIC codes for hospitality businesses

Hospitality businesses often use casual language like venue, food business or operator, but ANZSIC decisions turn on the main service format: sit-down dining, takeaway, bar service or accommodation.

Classify by service format

A cafe, restaurant, takeaway shop, pub and hotel venue can all sell food and drink, but they do not automatically share the same ANZSIC class. The main customer experience and operating model are what matter most.

Use the candidate class pages to compare service style, not just menu type.

Food and accommodation are not the same branch

Businesses that provide rooms, overnight stays or site-based accommodation usually sit in a different part of the hierarchy from businesses that mainly provide meals and beverages. This is a common source of confusion for small operators with mixed offerings.

If one activity is clearly dominant, follow that predominant activity rather than trying to split the business concept in half.

Review the code when the venue model changes

A business that started as takeaway can later add seated service, liquor, catering or accommodation. When the operating model changes, the code may need review so that registration and tax-facing references still align with the actual business.

That is particularly important where the business uses both ANZSIC and BIC references across different workflows.

Frequently asked questions

Should a cafe and a takeaway shop use the same ANZSIC class?

Not always. If the service model is materially different, the correct class may change even when the food style is similar.

How should I classify a pub with meals?

Check whether the business mainly operates as a bar, restaurant or accommodation venue, then confirm with the class descriptions.

What if the venue offers catering as well?

Use the code that matches the predominant activity, not the side service, unless catering has become the main business output.
