ANZSIC codes for transport businesses

Transport classification gets messy when a business mixes freight, passenger movement, warehousing and logistics support. The main code still has to follow the predominant transport service.

Start with who or what is being moved

The first split is often simple: passenger transport, freight transport, storage, or support services. That distinction moves the business into a different branch of the hierarchy before you even compare class-level pages.

Once that top-level split is clear, the final class usually becomes much easier to narrow.

Logistics support may not be transport itself

Some businesses arrange, coordinate or support transport rather than operating the vehicles or freight movement directly. In those cases, the right class may sit in support services rather than the transport operator class the business name suggests.

This is especially relevant for customs agencies, freight forwarders and coordination-heavy logistics models.

Review mode-specific classes carefully

Road, rail, water and air transport are not interchangeable. Even inside road transport, freight and passenger operations can separate cleanly at class level.

Use the leaf pages to compare exclusions and nearby transport classes before you lock in the final code.

Frequently asked questions

Can a courier and a freight carrier use the same ANZSIC code?

Sometimes, but not automatically. The right class depends on the actual transport model and the predominant service delivered.

Where do logistics companies usually sit?

It depends on whether they mainly move goods, store them or coordinate transport support services. Read the support and operator classes together.

Should I use a transport code if I only arrange freight?

Not necessarily. If the business mainly coordinates or supports movement rather than operating it, a support-services class may be the better fit.
